Fraser Fir Christmas trees are living
organisms. While in the tree field, they
are able to create their own food
through the process of photosynthesis.
They experience winter winds, rain and
ice storms, and summer heat. Because
they are a native plant, they are able
to flourish in the weather conditions
found in the High Country. However once
trees are cut, they are totally
dependent on humans for survival. Once
harvested, growers keep freshly cut
trees in shaded cover to keep them from
drying out. When they are finally placed
in the customer’s home, Christmas trees
require care to keep them fresh and well
hydrated. The customer who appreciates a
live, beautiful dark green Fraser fir
must keep the tree watered to keep it
looking like the “Perfect” Christmas
tree. This means watering every day
until the tree slows its water
consumption. A little bit of water goes
a long way in preserving the quality of
the Perfect Fraser fir.
Recycling Trees
Once the season is over, trees can be
recycled through community recycling
programs. There are such programs all
over the Unites States. Trees can also
be chipped into landscape mulch, sunken
into ponds and creeks to provide
excellent fish habitat, utilized on the
coast to help prevent dune erosion and
rebuild coastal wetlands, or simply
hauled into the perimeter of the yard to
provide wildlife habitat for songbirds,
insects, and small mammals. Because a
REAL tree is a living organism, it too
can be returned to the earth, where it
will slowly decompose into important
nutrients for the soil and surrounding
plants.
